I have this bizarre cpu leak that comes and goes as it pleases, but none of the guides I have found are very practically worded for the everyday guy. I really need something simple to figure all of this out, my laptop is usually great but every once in a while, the CPU use is obviously being affected by something that isn't supposed to be running and I end up needing a hard reset. There are no patterns I can identify, just need some suggestions as to how to approach the problem

Are you able to open up task manager? that is an easy way to see what is going on. In my experience it is either windows updating or else your antivirus. If it happens regularly, you can just open up task manager and sort by CPU use when you start having problems.
